To the Memory of Willam Allen Crouch JP 1821-1899 WA Crouch studied
architecture under his uncle, Sir William Tite,
before coming to Australia in 1845. He became one of the
earliest settlers in Mt Gambier and together with PD Prankerd,
owned land in the MacDonnell Bay district. This he surveyed and subdivided
into a township he called Allendale and named the streets after his children
Edmund, William and Geraldine. He donated land for churches in Allendale and
Mount Gambier and supervised their construction. He was the first man to use
Mount Gambier stone for building and erected the first two storey
building south of Murray Bridge. He was also storekeeper, postmaster,
National Bank agent and land and shipping agent before retiring to his
property “Lowan” at Kalangadoo. The name
‘Allendale’ embodied his second name which came from Cardinal William Allen
(1532-1594), a family connection. Erected by his grand-daughter, Mrs Irene Richter, born 1894 ALLENDALE MEMORIAL

Allendale East Cave Allendale East South Australia Australia |
ALLENDALE EAST CAVE This cave was used
in the early years of settlement to water the teams of horses and bullocks on
the way to and from Port MacDonnell. A hand pump and trough was set up to
make the task easier. In later years a stone wall was built around the cave
to prevent anyone getting into the cave. At one time an attempt was made to
fill the cave so they could build the road over it, but the filling subsided
and the cave remains open. It is now a popular spot for cave divers. |
