Cemetery Sexton’s Cottage Mt Gambier |
Heritage Fence Replication Joint project of the
Lions and Lioness Clubs of Mount Gambier and the City of Mount Gambier 2005 (Based on the
original 1930’s fence) Information Board A cemetery site was
included in the original Mount Gambier survey of 1861 and the layout based on
a plan by AH Gardener, who won a competition in early 1868. The cemetery
opened in August 1868 with the first internment being that of Edward Hodge
aged 13 weeks, son of Mr and Mrs
Thomas Hodge of Caveton. The cemetery
entrance gates were built by Messrs Fulton and Co. of Adelaide and erected by
Owen Jones in 1884. The Cedar trees lining the main drive were planted at
that time. The Sexton’s Cottage
was built in 1904 by Joseph Hosking Snr, for £250
to the design of Thomas Hall. Constructed of red dolomite and limestone in
Gothic architectural style, its special features are gables and breaks. The
dolomite masonry on the front in pitch-faced rubble work. The cottage consists
of three rooms, a pantry and an entrance porch. The north room was used by
the clergymen conducting the funerals and the Sexton occupied the others.
There are open fireplaces in each of the three larger rooms,
all connected to the same chimney but there is no door between the front room
and the rest of the cottage. Furniture consisted of table, chairs, a hat rail
and pegs, a dressing table, looking glass, and rails and hooks for files as
well as the necessary tools for the digging of graves. The Cottage was
fully restored in 1988 by the City of Mount Gambier. Today the north room is
still used as the records room but the others are used by the Mount Gambier
Heritage and History Society. |

near the Botanic Gardens in Adelaide. The side view looked like Mount

top to bottom; another connection, Darwin is where the lotus has it’s natural habitat. National Limestone

Pioneer Park Crouch St Mt Gambier Australia Cairn PIONEER PARK WHAT IS A PIONEER PARK? HISTORICAL MOMENTS ATTHE PARK AMONG THOSE BURIED HERE PLAN OF THE CEMETERY APRIL 1866 Sculpture |
Erected in memory of
the pioneers laid to rest in this park 1854-1913 Information Boards PIONEER PARK Mount Gambier’s
First Official Cemetery 1854-1914 “Should old Gambiertonians
be forgot, What though some slumber low, Beside the town they helped to found….” Harry Hickmer, 1910 This memorial wall
was constructed in 2003 to commemorate those early pioneers buried here, who
leave behind a rich legacy for all to appreciate. Between the years of 1854
and 1913 the ‘Burying Ground’ then ‘Old Cemetery’ provided a place of
internment for the residents of Mount Gambier and surrounding district. Since
the first burial the cemetery has received the remains of over 600 pioneers. WHAT IS A PIONEER PARK? Mt Gambier’s Pioneer
Park was dedicated as parklands by the state government in 1939… Originally
trees were felled and all existing headstone relocated to the Old Council
Depot, with the intention being to replace them in a dome shaped memorial
cairn, to be constructed from dolomite. The design was approved but never
went ahead with council opting for a smaller obelisk that still exists today.
Unfortunately the original headstones were disposed of during the period and
heritage elements of immense historical and cultural significance were lost HISTORICAL MOMENTS ATTHE PARK A picture of the
history of Pioneer Park is gained through reports in Council Minutes, the
South East Times and the Border Watch newspapers. Some of the events listed include: 1854 July Surveyor William
Murray was engaged by Hastings Cunningham Esq. to re-survey section 1103,
which was to become the city of Mount Gambier. One acre and one perch of land
on the corner of Gwendoline Street and Crouch
Street South was set aside for a cemetery. 1854 August 26 First burial ‘Frank
Hunter’ following an accident at Compton. 1854 October Sale of land from Mr Evelyn P Sturt to H
Cunningham formalized. 1860 July 13 Land formally
conveyed from Mr HL Cunningham Esq. to Alexander
Mitchell, who subsequently took over the running of the privately owned
cemetery. 1864 April 5 Death of Alexander
Mitchell. Trusteeship for the land was invested in his wife, Helen, Mr William Allen Crouch and Dr J Edward Wehl. 1864 September 15 Cemetery
Gazetted with Albert Kirton
Varley appointed as Curator 1914 December 2 The Old Cemetery
was destroyed by fire 1938 August 11 Cemetery officially
closed 1942 April the Australian
Genealogist contained information about headstone transcriptions from the Old
Cemetery compiled by I Trentham-Edgar, from the
Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day saints. He was hopeful that the
headstones would be preserved and then taken to the New Cemetery. 1946 March 8 In a return letter
to Mr Herbert K Bors,
relative to one of the Pioneers, from Town Clerk, Mr
Frank E Sharley, he explains the proposed
improvements to the Park and the reason for its slow implementation. The original cairn of Pioneer Park was
formerly part of the Mitchell family headstone. AMONG THOSE BURIED HERE August 1854 – Hunter, Andrew Francis
“Frank” The first burial in
the piece of land set aside by Mr Hastings
Cunningham Esq. for a cemetery, was Mr ‘Frank’
Hunter who died as a result of an accident that occurred on the 18th
August 1854. A sad report in the South Australian Register described the accident. “Dreadful Accident – A frightful accident
occurred on the 18th ult at Compton,
near Mt Gambier, by which Mr F Hunter, a settler
lost his life. Amongst a number of cattle collected together in a stockyard
to be branded, was a ferocious bull, which being excited from having been
driven, was creating considerable confusion in the yard. Mr
Hunter went into the enclosure for the purpose of turning him out, when the
infuriated animal turned upon him. One of the unfortunate man’s ribs were broken, his side was torn open and various other
injuries inflicted on him. He was taken into the house and Dr Wehl was immediately in attendance, and did all that
professional skill could suggest for the sufferer, but he only lingered until
the 24th when death put an end to his torture.” April 1864 – Alexander Mitchell Alexander Mitchell
is buried in the south west corner of the cemetery in the same grave as
Edward Massey who died on 19th April 1861. Also in the same plot is James Hedley Mitchell, Helen Frew and Percy Hedley.
Alexander was the well known landlord of the Mount Gambier Hotel, and his
death at the age of 41 years in April 1864 was quite sudden. It was believed
his death was caused by congestion of the lungs. He was one of the earliest
residents of the district and a benefactor of Mount Gambier. He arrived in
the 1840’s and managed a station for Mr Neil Black.
After quitting his employment he purchased a considerable quantity of land in
the township and became owner of the cemetery. March 1868 – MacDonald, Sarah The public of Mount
Gambier learned that the wife of Mr John MacDonald,
proprietor of the Mac’s Hotel, was found drowned in shallow water in the
Valley Lake. She had been confined three months before and suffered delicate
health and a fear of something unseen. It appeared that Mrs
MacDonald walked from her home at 10am and when it was discovered that she
was not visiting friends as planned, her absence created uneasiness. George Greve found her body and with the aid of an aborigine,
retrieved it from three feet of water. The subsequent inquest gave a verdict
of “committed self destruction by
drowning herself whilst laboring under temporary insanity.” November 1865 – Renfrey,
Richard Richard was riding
on the oft shaft of a dray, and the driver on the near shaft. The boy lost
balance and fell between the horse and the dray. He attempted to crawl out,
but the wheel caught him in the side and crushed him so severely that he died
within a few hours. February 1864 – Boiler Accident ‘Four Deaths – One With Boots Left On’ An awful catastrophe
occurred when the boiler of a steam engine threshing machine exploded whilst
at work on the farm of Mr Tuite
(now on Suttontown Road). Amid the debris of the engine were the bodies of
four dead men and those wounded. Those killed were J
Pease, and engineer from Melbourne and J Bartlett, P Hogan and C Deichman, all farm labourers. With the exception of
Hogan, whose body lay beside the thrasher, the others were thrown quite a
considerable distance. The engineer had everything blown from his body except
his boots. April 1865 – Mr Blakesel Mr Blakesel, who previously resided at Beneyo,
Mosquito Plains for many years, had recently come to live in the Mount
Gambier district. The newspaper report of the 1st of April 1865,
in the Border Watch noted that he
passed away at the age of 103 years. This would make him the oldest man to be
buried in the Old Cemetery, as far as can be ascertained. A discrepancy over
his age comes from the Registered Death, which states he was 101 years of
age, and that he was from Binnum Binnum, his name being Richard Blacksall. February 1863 - Green, George George Green was
engaged in sinking a well when he hit a hard limestone
strata which he proposed to soften by burning wood which was to be
lowered into the 100 foot shaft and ignited. The next day George descended
into the well to collect the debris and while it was being raised to the
surface he began moaning and choking. Several attempts were made to rescue
him over the next three hours. His body was eventually brought up by Henry
Ball, a Cornish miner. The inquest stated that “Death by suffocation was caused by foul air, from lighting the fire”. Leake
Family On Sunday 16tj
September 1860, a highly respected colonist, Mr
Robert Rowland Leake, of Glencoe, who had passed
away from heart disease, was interred in the cemetery. About 300 persons from
all classes attended his funeral, some of whom had traveled a considerable
distance to pay their last respects. Robert Leake
had settled in the south east of South Australia by 1845. He was the first
representative for Victoria in the South Australian Lower House but resigned
his position within 6 months due to having to travel the 400 miles on
horseback to take up his seat in Adelaide. Robert, with his brother Edward John,
was the holder of occupational licenses of properties that surrounded Lake Leake, Glencoe, Mount Muirhead
and Mount Schank. It appears that both men were ‘big in stature’. Edward had
retired to Portland and The Punt (Nelson), but returned to the Frontier House
after the death of Robert. Edward passed away 27th April 1867,
after ailing for some time with dropsy and disease of the heart. Both are
interred in the one tomb in the cemetery. Research compiled for the Mount Gambier
Heritage Society Inc and published in “A Sorrowful Spot – History of Mount
Gambier’s First Cemetery 1854-1913”. PLAN OF THE CEMETERY APRIL 1866 Surnames included on the plan left to

the Sportsman’s Arms opened on the corner of Sutton Avenue and Commercial
Street West at Rosaville, a small settlement about
a mile from the township of Mount Gambier Formerly the store
of George Beattie, the hotel conversion was at first refused a license until
sufficient stabling was built for the owner and mine host, Frederick Van Damme. The ‘Stables’ in
time became a hive of activity when the Smith’s forge was working and local
Jockeys and Hunters were discussing the prospects of the nearby ‘Cave Paddock’
Race meetings which were held diagonally opposite the hotel. In 1919, after 50
years of trading and 13 successive licensees, the Sportsman’s Arms lost it
license, and during 1920 the building was demolished. For several decades the
stables continued to function but by 1990 were about to meet the same fate. In 1991 the Mount
Gambier Heritage Society, aware of the possibility the old stables may be
demolished, negotiated for their retention and were eventually able to secure
a lease of the property with the owners, the South Australian Housing Trust. Restoration work was
assisted by Government sponsored programs such as the Landcare
Environment Action Program (LEAP) and Correctional Services Community
Services Program. The restoration project was completed in 1994. Special
acknowledgement to Mount Gambier artist, Miss Cathleen Edkins,
whose painting of the Stables was auctioned as a fundraiser and provided
considerable financial resources for the Mount Gambier Heritage Society to
complete the project. The building now
houses a collection of memorabilia that relates to the days when the horse
and carriage were the only means of transport in Mount Gambier. |

The Centenary of
Federation Arch was constructed by Council to celebrate the Centenary of
Federation 1901-2001. The arch was a
significant project for the city as a permanent reminder and landmark of the
local community celebration of the Centenary of Federation. The Centenary of
Federation Arch comprises four limestone/dolomite piers and an interlocking
timber structure over. Arches were a
significant part of 1901 the year of Federation celebrations and Council and
the community planning team were very keen to compliment this historical
theme and concept in the year 2001. Council notes the
dedication and work of the community members of the Mount Gambier and
District Centenary of Federation Planning Group who organised the 2001 celebrations. The design of the
arch draws its inspiration from the commemorative arch spanning the main
intersection of Mount Gambier during the Centenary of South Australia
Celebrations in 1936. Images show the 1936
arch to be a timber trussed structure with a series of timber crossed braces
across its extent. A structural column placed in the centre of the
intersection supported the arch at its highest point. The Centenary of
Federation Arch consists of four dressed piers rising 2.1m from ground level.
From these piers two timber arches span the roadway such that they lean
against each other at the highest point in a typical bridge like formation.
The two arches are constructed from a series of square profile seasoned
hardened posts, joined together by steel plates concealed within slots. Centenary of

Foundation Stone Laid by DrC C McDonald Mayor of Mt Gambier March13 1912 This stone was laid
by Wm Hay, Esq Mayor 21.10.33 Information Board This weapon, a 1917
Krupp 77mm Field Gun model FK16 was used by the German Imperial Forces
against the Allies during the Great War of 1914-1918. The gun was captured
on the 8the August 1918 by soldiers of the 27th Battalion AIF
during action at Warfusee, Abancourt
in France. The battle was referred to as the ‘August 8th”
offensive and involved all live Australian divisions in France. The 27th
Battalion was part of the second division who advanced in an easterly
direction from Villers-Bretonneux in foggy
conditions on the morning of August 8th. On reaching a steep
valley that ran from their position on through Warfusee
the 27th were shelled at point blank range by a battery of enemy
field guns. These guns were one of four German batteries placed between Marcelcave and Warfusee and
manned by the 79th Feldartillerie
Regiment (41st Division). The Australians quickly overran the
position with infantry and tanks, capturing the guns intact. This gun is one
of that battery. The gun was
initially presented to the City of Adelaide, who in turn presented it to the
Town of Mount Gambier in 1920.During the early 1920’s the gun was displayed
in the Cave Gardens before being moved to Vanisittart
Park and it’s familiar position adjacent to the City’s War Memorial. Owing to its
dilapidated and dangerous condition the decision was made to remove the gun
in 1984 pending a decision as to its future. The Mount Gambier Veteran
and Vintage Car Club undertook restoration of the weapon in that year. Work
continued steadily on that project over six years until its completion in
1991. During that time the club organised a public appeal for finance, sought
