Coastal Radio Station Wireless Road East Mount Gambier South Australia |
VIY Mount Gambier In 1912, land to the
north of this marker was purchased by the Commonwealth Government from Mr AJ Kilsby to build a second
coastal radio station in South Australia. The station cost £2438 and operated
between 1913 and 1920. The first officer in charge was Mr
HF Coffey followed by Mr AS Hart. The antenna was
an umbrella type on a 51m mast weighing 18 tonnes
and fabricated from laminated Oregon planks held together by 2000 volts. The
mast was erected using three jury masts and a winch operated by 8 men. The
transmitter was of the Basillie design using a
quenched arc and powered from a bank of 45 accumulators. Receiving equipment
included a loose coupler crystal set. South East Radio

Umpherston Sinkhole Jubilee Highway Mount Gambier South Australia |
Information Boards Umpherston Sinkhole James Umpherston James Umpherston
settled in Mt Gambier in 1860 and became a prominent citizen in the district.
He was a Member of State Parliament, Chairman of the District Council and
President of the Show Society. Umpherston died in 1900, aged 87, leaving a
wife but no children. A Novel Garden Mr
James Umpherston, of The Caves, has recently been working out a
transformation scene in one of those vast holes in the earth from which his
place takes its name. The hole, or cave, dealt with is the one on the town
side of his residence. A broad footway has been cut into the rock for a good way
down, and a substantial wooden stairway affords an easy descent from there to
the bottom. Three-fourths of the bottom was originally covered with an
irregular heap – fragments of rock and soil. The former have now been broken
up into handy blocks and used in forming embankments. The soil was then
collected into beds, and in this way, several terraces have been formed,
which are very pleasing to the eye from whatever point they are viewed. The
beds have been stocked with shrubs and flowers, which appear likely to thrive
well. A striking feature of the scene is two large walnut trees. These were
transplanted there a good many years ago to save them from the frost, a
precaution which answered well. They are now immense trees, and not only
thrive but bear abundantly. They are not likely to increase in height much
more; they are up to the frost level and get warning every now and again that
they must come no higher. But the crowning attention is the water. It
occupies about a third of the bottom. On this Mr Umpherston
has placed a boat, and a sail round the tiny lake affords not only a novel
sensation but gives a better idea of the weird grandeur and beauty of the
place. Sailing under the great overhanging cliffs – the water in places of
unknown depth – gives one an uncanny sort of feeling not unmixed with
enjoyment. A new feature has all been added to the water in the shape
of a small island, on which has been erected a Robinson Crusoe looking hut.
This is not inaptly named “The Island of Departed Spirits”,
the visitor will understand why when he sees it. A flock of ducks gives life
and interest to the water, which is further remarkable by a growth of
miniature cress, which thickly covers it, rendering the water invisible till
it is disturbed. In his Cave Garden Mr Umpherston
has an object of a rare beauty and interest well worth a visit and well worth
the trouble and expense he has been at to create it. The Border Watch Saturday October 16
1886 A Grand Victorian Residence James Umpherston’s original residence, The Caves, erected after
he purchased the farm in 1868, was located just outside this reserve in the
grounds of the timber mill. When Umpherston died in 1900, the property passed
to his nephew, JU Innes. The Caves farm was
purchased by the Hon. Joseph Botterill MLC, in 1919
and although it was sold after his death in 1920, Mrs
Botterill and her children continued to live in the
house until 1929 when it was sold to the Lockie
brothers. The Woods and
Forests Department (now Primary Industries) purchased the property in 1949
and demolished the house in 1964 to make way for further development of the
Mount Gambier State Saw Mill. The remaining tall pines are the survivors of a
row of trees which lined the driveway from the main road. The Very Handsome and Substantial Residence Containing ten rooms, kitchen, bathroom and
pantry with detached men’s room, out-kitchen, dairy and laundry; with all the
necessary buildings for carrying on the farm. The conservatories and orchard and
carefully kept grounds make it altogether one of the most beautiful
properties in the colony. The Border Watch January 20 1892 History In 1854, John Beswick purchased 178 acres of land which included this
sinkhole, James Umpherston, who arrived in Mount Gambier in 1860, purchases Beswick’s farm in 1868. Extensive improvements were made
to the property including a grand Victorian residence and gardens. It was
named ‘The Caves’. In 1884, Umpherston
retired from active farming and began to develop the sinkhole as a ‘pleasant
resort in the heat of the summer’. A footpath was cut from the highest point
to the bottom of the sinkhole and a wooden staircase erected. Terraces and
rock walkways were constructed, and the floor was planted with ferns, shrubs
and trees. A third of the
bottom of the sinkhole was (at that time) covered with water and a boat was
used to enable visitors to view the weird grandeur from vantage points. A hut
was erected on a small island in the lake, to add to the fairyland scene. Umpherston died in
1900 and the property was purchased by his nephew, JU Innes in 1901. In the
following years the sinkhole gradually fell into disuse and disrepair and as
the regional groundwater level dropped, the lake disappeared. In 1918 The Caves
farm was acquired by the Hon Joseph Botterill MLC,
who died in 1920 and although the property was sold Mrs
Botterill and her children continued to occupy the
residence until 1929 when it was bought by the Lockie
brothers. The former Woods and
Forests Department bought the remaining land and buildings in 1949 from the
executors of the will of Miss Mary Ann Lockie. The Mount Gambier
State Saw Mill was erected nearby in 1958 and Umpherston’s
former residence was demolished in 1964. Further deterioration of the
sinkhole occurred due to lack of care and commitment. City of Mount

Fire These seats were cut
from logs recovered from trees killed by the fires on 14.2.83 and stored
under water in Lake Bonney until 1987. After
removal from water storage logs were sawn, dried and preservative treated to
act as a lasting reminder of the fire devastation and subsequent salvage
operation in our forest plantations. Information Board Umpherston Sinkhole Cenotes and other Encounters This sculpture was
created by Ivo Tadic of
Mount Gambier and completed in April 1997. The form of the sculpture was
inspired by the geological processes which create the regions sinkholes and
caves. These have been formed by rainwater dissolving limestone over millions
of years. The top section of
the sculpture represents sinkholes that are open to the sky. The middle
section represents hidden fissures created by solution of limestone and the
lower section represents limestone prior to any solution activity. Like all artistic work, the final
definition has been left to be interpreted by each person. The sculpture is
composed of sawn blocks of Gambier Limestone from nearby quarries. This
limestone was formed 15-40 million years ago and is composed of fragments of
marine animals. The limestone blocks are strengthened by twin steel columns
embedded in a concrete footing. These columns are tied to the stone courses
in each direction. Mines and Energy

payload increased to anything up to 15 tonne. The Hoo Hoo Club purchased the
truck in 1989 as a restoration project for displays throughout the Region.
Its final resting place will be in the soon-to-be announced Timber Museum. Honour Roll The Mount Gambier Hoo Hoo Club 214 acknowledges
