Chinese Memorial During the years
1856-58, 16,500 Chinese landed near this spot and walked 20o miles to the Victorian
Goldields in search of gold. Re-enacted for the
State’s Jubilee 150th celebration in 1986 Erected by the
Chamber of Commerce The Chinese
translation was unveiled on the 9th June 1996 by Liang Jianming, Consul General, People’s Republic of China, in
Melbourne as part of Robe’s Sesquicentenary year

erected as a memorial to Albert Fennell Borg Villumsen Richard Fennell Ronald Brooks who were lost at sea
in a storm when their fishing vessel Jedda II
foundered on 13-14th April 1985 off the Coorong This small tribute

This plaque and
cairn erected by the Robe RSL in recognition of the services rendered by the
service personnel and citizens of Robe in times of war and peace. These pine trees
were planted as a memorial to the soldiers of World War I Lest We Forget A 150 project In memory of Joyce
Constance Sanders 1916-1996 And Eric Leveson Sanders 1910-2000 Who met at Robe in
1934 |

The True History of
the Robe Garage Mr SW Hann
obtained the block of land on which the Robe Shell Garage now stands, for the
sum of £15. In 1926 he had the garage built. It was leased to Mr Bill Drew. Then Mr Frank
Squire leased the business. The garage was then extended in 1935, whereby it
was leased to Mr Ken Gurry
and Mr Hancock. Mr Tom
Lomax leased it for a while. After a few years Mr
Roy Norgate purchased it in 1950 for the sum of
£1,200. Later it was sold to Neil Beard and Ken Cropp.
The next owner was an Alan and Elva Loveday, who sold
it to Keith Humphry’s and then Robin Vearing bought it and sold it to Monfries
and Burchell, who had the building demolished and
the new one erected. The original house was erected in 1946 consisting of two
mess huts from Loveday Camp. |

Lake Fellmongery (meaning Woolwash) Owes it’s name to
the sailing ship ‘Duilius’ Wrecked in Guichen
Bay 1858. Her cargo of salt laden wool was salvaged, washed here, fetching
much higher prices and starting a new industry. Kindly donated by EPT (Whacker)

recognises the excellent service and contribution to the Robe community by
members of the South Australia Police since 1846, and the significance of
this site from which that service has been provided. Unveiled by Mr DA Hunt

National Trust This German mine was
towed ashore on Long Beach by Roy McInnes on 4th
June 1941 Further history is
recorded in the Customs House Museum 1788-1988 This cairn
commemorates the period 1847-1920 when bullock teamsters used this Royal
Circus when offloading produce for shipment at Port Robe. Mr
Percy Thorpe, committee member of the Aust. Bullock Drivers League, donated
and unveiled this plaque as a tribute to those early teamsters. Signal Canon from Koenig Willem II Dutch barque of 800 tons Wrecked in a gale
with a loss of 16 crew on Long Beach on 30th June 1857 after unloading near this
spot Chinese passengers from Hong Kong. Plaque donated by NA
Gibbons Matthew Flinders RN 1774-1814 Commander of HM
Sloop ‘Investigator’ when surveying the south coast of Australia, named Baudin Rocks on 13 April 1802 to honour the commander of
the French expedition. This was the last place-name applied by Flinders in
South Australia. Unveiled 2nd October 1948 |
